  • The playing area must have a minimum water depth of 2.00 meters.
  • Markings such as the 2m line (red), 5m line (yellow), and Half line (white) define key zones.

Equipment

  • A standard water polo goal (net or cage) is used.
  • The ball adheres to the standard water polo specifications.
  • Players wear caps, with #1 reserved for the goalie and #2-7 for field players.

Teams and Substitutes

  • Each roster consists of 7 players.
  • During play, 4 players (1 goalie and 3 field players) are on the field.
  • The bench includes 3 players and coaches.
  • Teams can field three substitutes who may enter from the touching corner.

Goal Keeper

  • A substituted goalkeeper can play in any position.
  • The goalie cannot leave their team's half.
  • Specific rules apply to the goalie's ball-handling within defined areas.

Officials

  • Official competitions feature one referee, two secretaries, and two timekeepers.
  • Secretaries maintain game records, signaling improper re-entry and other violations.
  • Timekeepers track play periods, time-outs, possession, and announce key moments.

Referee

  • The referee has absolute authority over the game, making final decisions.
  • The referee starts the game and decides on goals, throws, and infringements.
  • Powers include ordering players out of the water and abandoning the game if necessary.

Duration of the Game

  • Matches consist of two 10-minute halves, following standard stop-time water polo rules.
  • Half-time is set at 5 minutes.
  • Tiebreakers involve shootouts with specific rules and a coin flip to determine shooting order.

Time Outs

  • One 1-minute timeout is allowed per period, requiring possession of the ball.
  • A failure to have ball possession during a timeout results in a 5m penalty shot for the opposition.

Corner Throw (2m)

  • Goals can be scored directly from a shot taken during a corner throw.

Exclusions Fouls

  • Committing specific offenses leads to exclusion fouls, with the excluded player touching the goal line and rejoining play.
